HSU opens CCAA vs. Chico State, CSU Stanislaus

ARCATA – California Collegiate Athletic Association is set to begin this weekend with a two game road trip against Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus. The Lumberjacks take on Chico State Friday in Chico, Calif. And Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday in Turlock, Calif.  Both matches are set to begin at 7pm.

Lumberjack notes: So far this season the Lumberjacks have achieved a 2-5 record during non- conference play, including a 1-2 record at the recent Humboldt Tournament last weekend.  With a little more team chemistry the Lumberjacks look to a successful season going into  conference play with a solid group of players.  Leading the Lumberjacks so far are senior outside hitter Lynsey Adams, averaging 3.19 kills per game, sophomore setter Joliann Arzadon, with 2.27 kills per game, and senior outside hitter Mallory Briney, who averages 2.12 kills per game. On the defensive side the Lumberjacks have been paced by specialist Dani Nelson, who is averaging 4.35 digs so far this season. Arzadon is close behind with an average of 3.12 per game. Also standing out on the defensive side is junior outside hitter Toni Kroeker, who has a total of 26 blocks so far this season. Senior setter Liz Shannon continues to lead the Lumberjacks in assists with 220 in the last seven games.
 
Opponent notes:
Chico State is currently ranked No. 21 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, and has a 5-2 record going into conference play. Last week the Wildcats went 1-3 at the Premier Challenge in Denver. They defeated Hawaii-Hilo but fell short to Florida Southern, Grand Valley State, and Central Missouri. …“Chico has six seniors, so we know they'll be tough,” said Humboldt State head volleyball coach Sue Woodstra. Lindsay Macias, Megan Cape, Crystal Trifeletti, and Makenzie Snyder all average over 2.5 kills per game. As a team, Chico State averages 12.3 kills per game, while its opponents only average 9.2. … Last week Snyder recorded a double-double with a team-high 15 kills and 11 digs. … Cal State Stanislaus holds a 3-4 record on the season. At the Otter Invitational in the Seaside Calif., the Warriors went 1-3, defeating William Jessup while falling to Western Washington and Eastern New Mexico. …Freshman outside hitter Lianne Vicchio leads the Warriors offense with 3.07 kills per game. Sophomore outside hitter Jen Gee follows shortly behind, averaging 3.04 kills so far this season, and sophomore defensive specialist Amanda Pielstick averages 4.15 digs per game. Cal Stanislaus averages 12.26 kills per game while its opponents average 9.67.
 
Head to Head: Humboldt State holds a 20-30 all-time match record against Chico State. During the teams' last meeting, the Lumberjacks fell short, losing to the Wildcats in three sets… The Lumberjacks lead Cal State Stanislaus with a 40-10 all-time record. Last season the Lumberjacks defeated the Warriors in four sets.
