Jacks prevail despite rugged effort

TURLOCK — Off kilter, out of control at times, with frequent stoppages, Humboldt State's 72-61 win over Cal State Stanislaus wasn't the tidiest affair. But the end result was still a boost for the Lumberjack women's basketball team in California Collegiate Athletic Association action Saturday.

Andrea Bobic came off the bench to score 18 points and Taylor Kilgore added 11 to help the Jacks improve to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the CCAA. Cal State Stanislaus lost for the second straight night at home, dropping to 6-7 and 1-5 in league.

"Bobic and Trisha (Alaba) gave us a spark," HSU head coach Joddie Gleason said. "In this conference depth is necessary. You need to have a bunch of people you can run in there. When we did that, they executed the game plan and we were able to pull out the win."

Gwen Page led the Warriors in scoring with 19 points, Lysandra Williams had 16 and Antwinette Turner added 10. Page was also her team's top rebounder with nine.

Another sluggish start plagued the Lumberjacks, with frequent foul calls and turnovers keeping them from establishing any rhythm. And again, leading scorers Brittney Taylor and Katie Franci experienced foul trouble that forced them to the bench.

Trisha Alaba entered the game midway through the first half, hitting a three-pointer and forcing turnovers with her quick hands on two straight Warrior possessions. Bobic also added an offensive presence and helped HSU at the free throw line hitting five of eight in the first half as the Jacks moved up, 38-28.

Franci and Taylor continued to get hit with the whistle, giving CSU Stanislaus a chance to answer. But the closest the Warriors would come was 10 points before the Jacks rebuilt the lead to 15 points. Some late free throw shooting by the Warriors contain the final margin.

"We need to get a whole lot tougher on the road," Gleason said. "We need to withstand physical play and respond without getting fouls."
