Jacks sweep roadtrip with 85-54 win over CSLA

LOS ANGELES – Strength inside and precision on the perimeter were too much for Cal State Los Angeles to overcome in a 85-54 loss to Humboldt State on Saturday.

After trading baskets early, Humboldt State took firm command in the second half, pushing its lead to as many as 27 points. The win improved the Jacks' record to 12-5 overall and they remained in second place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with a 7-3 mark at the midway point of league action.

Katie Franci scored 16 points, Trisha Alaba had 13, Andrea Bobic scored 11 and Jennifer Enos added 10 points to help the Jacks pull away. Shatori Dearman led the Golden Eagles with 16 points and Shyneese Walter had 10, but that pair couldn't keep them from dropping to 2-14 overall and 1-9 in conference.

"Our bench gave us a lift again, and it was nice to have our freshmen get a chance to contribute after working so hard in practice all week," HSU head coach Joddie Gleason said, after watching her reserves outscore CSLA 43-12.

In the game's early minutes Walter's three pointer put CSLA ahead 11-10 and for awhile, the Lumbejacks couldn't find an answer. Brittney Taylor hit a fadeaway to put HSU back up, and Bobic's three-pointer helped HSU maintain an edge.

Bree Halsey took a nice feed from Taylor on the baseline for an easy two, extending HSU's lead to 25-17. But Amber Whittington gave the Eagles an answer, driving the baseline for consecutive layins, then forced a turnover as CSLA crept within five at 28-23.

Bobic and Alaba found the range from the perimeter, helping build the lead again, but Whittington trimmed it with a short jumper. HSU's Whitney Howard faded away for a shot over the 6-3 Cassie Suffolk, sending the Jacks into halftime with a 35-26 lead.

Franci started the second half quickly with consecutive steals, going the distance for two layins. Enos picked off an inbounds on CSLA's next possession, moving HSU up 41-26 only a minute in.

After earning only four chances from the free throw line in the first half, HSU forced the ball inside and was rewarded in the second. Franci hit two free throws, then followed with a three-pointer from the top of the key to make the score 51-31. Everyone got in on the action the remainder of the game, with all but one of HSU's 12-person travel squad scoring points.

Humboldt State is back on the road again Thursday to take on Sonoma State in Rohnert Park. The Lumberjacks return to their home court for Saturday's game against league-leader UC San Diego.
