ROHNERT PARK — Finding a way when all had failed earlier, Humboldt State rallied from a 10-point deficit to claim a 60-56 win over Sonoma State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women's basketball game
Wednesday.
Andrea Bobic came off the bench to score a career-high 19 points to pace HSU, helping the Jacks improve to 13-5 overall and 8-3 in the CCAA.
Brittney Taylor had a big second half on the way to scoring 14 points, and
Katie Franci added 10 despite early foul trouble.
Stephanie Barnes had 15 points and Marie Sweet scored 11 for the Seawolves, who dropped to 8-10 and 4-7 in league.
The Jacks, who found out earlier in the day that they were ranked No. 4 in the West Region in the first NCAA Division II poll, looked anything like a squad that earned that respect in the first half. Indicative of their struggles was a 28 percent shooting mark in the opening period.
"In the first half we didn't come out with urgency or energy," HSU head coach
Joddie Gleason said. "Sonoma State did a great job of making us take tough shots and we turned the ball over."
Off to a slow start, the Lumberjacks found trouble on both ends of the court when the shots wouldn't fall on offense and fouls were the results of their defensive efforts. Sonoma took advantage as Lauren Redfield's three-pointer extending its advantage to 10 points for the second time midway through the opening half.
Jennifer Enos' three-pointer trimmed the lead to three points, but Jaclyn Bisordi answered with one of her own for SSU to put her team ahead 22-13. A putback by Peterson trimmed the lead to five points, but Jennifer Russo hit from long range to give the Seawolves a 25-17 halftime lead.
A patient approach paid off in the early minutes of the second half as Humboldt State going inside to Franci and Taylor successfully. Franci stepped outside to drain a three-pointer, then stole a pass and drove the distance for a layup to cut the lead to 29-28.
Barnes caught the front of the rim with a long jumper that dribbled into the hoop to keep the Jacks at bay, but another Jacks' surge pulled them within one again. Heading into the final nine minutes, Sonoma State held a 41-39 lead, but Bobic picked off a pass and found Enos for a layup that tied the game 41-41.
Two possessions later Bobic's three-pointer gave HSU its first lead at 44-41, and a layup by Taylor followed by another Bobic three provided HSU with its largest advantage at eight points. Sonoma State wouldn't let the Jacks get away, and managed an outburst of their own and shaved it down to three again at 55-52 on a pair of free throws by Sweet.
Bobic again, helped the Jacks keep the game under control, hitting four straight free throws in the final minute to preserve the win.
"Bobic is a great player," Gleason said "She came up huge
today. She was the only one hitting from the perimeter in the first half, and she also got in there on defense and with rebounding."
Humboldt State is back home
Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. game against league-leader and unbeaten UC San Diego.
