SEASIDE – With a goal in the 48th minute the Humboldt State men's soccer team completed a two-game weekend sweep of California Collegiate Athletic Association bay area rivals. On Sunday the Jacks defeated the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters 1-0 to improve their record to 5-9-2 overall and 4-7-1 in conference. The Otters are now 4-9-3 on the season and 3-6-3 in the CCAA. On Friday HSU downed SFSU 2-1 in overtime.
The CSUMB match was very physical from the outset with 34 fouls called by the end of the game. There were 11 yellow cards handed out, four to the Jacks. Among the Otters' seven cards, Gabe Glass received two and was sent off in the 53rd minute.
Despite the physical play the Humboldt State offense outshot CSUMB 19-9 for the match, including 9-4 in the first half. The Jacks put a total of five shots on frame in the first period and in the last three minutes of the half ramped up the pressure with three blasts that Otters keeper Brendan Baca stopped to maintain the 0-0 score at the half.
At the 47:45 mark, Peter Darquea, a freshman from Apple Valley, Calif., took a shot that Baca saved but didn't secure. The rebound came out in front of the box and Tony Ramirez knocked it home to give the Jacks at 1-0 lead that they would carry to the final whistle.
Ramirez led the offensive attack, collecting his second goal of the season on three shots. Zlatan Sahmanovic attempted three shots, while Ben Vasser and Dominic Trevisan each took two.
Keeper Kyle Verle had two saves as he improved his record to 5-8-2.
Humboldt State is 4-2-0 in its last six matches after starting the season 1-7-2. With today's result and Friday's win at SFSU, the Lumberjacks have climbed from sixth to fourth place in the CCAA North.
Next week HSU travels to the two team who are ahead of them in the conference. On Friday they are in Turlock to face Cal State Stanislaus in a 7 p.m. kickoff. On Sunday, the side visits Chico State with the match scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
