Otters knock down Lumberjacks in four sets

ARCATA — Unable to summon a spark, Humboldt State fell in four sets to visiting Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday, losing 25-20, 25-13, 20-25, 25-18 in California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball action.

Alisah Thomas totaled 20 kills, Kerri Sudsarna had 14 and Rheann Fall 12, helping the Otters improved to 9-15 overall and 4-11 in the CCAA. Oceana Matsubu was the only Lumberjack to crack double digits, putting away 11 kills for HSU, now 7-17 and 3-13 in league.

"We didn't start the match with any intensity," HSU head coach Sue Woodstra said. "You can't wait until the third game to start playing. We just weren't ready to do the work tonight."

Trading points throughout, neither team could put together a run early in the opening set. But the Jacks' passing struggles surfaced just as the Otters' serving heated up, Fall serving a pair of aces and Lauren Manzo achieving another.

Fall took advantage of the Jack's passing woes again in the second set, serving three consecutive aces to help her team establish a comfortable lead. HSU briefly rallied behind its block, but Thomas knocked down the final point to seal the CSUMB win.

Humboldt State quickly gained an 8-3 advantage in the third set, Dani Nelson serving for three straight points. The Otters rallied to twice take the lead, moving up for the final time at 15-14 on another Thomas kill, before service aces by Matsubu and Allison Drobish helped the Jacks gain the advantage again.

CSUMB broke away from HSU in the fourth set, moving up 20-15 on kill by Elizabeth Hanna, finishing off the match with consecutive successful attacks from Fall.

Defensively, Katie Bos topped the Otters with 12 digs while Matsubu and Callan Finney had 11 each for HSU. Manzo had 46 assists for CSUMB and Jo Arzadon finished with 34 for HSU.

Lesley Kalbrener, who recently returned to the team after missing a month with a knee injury, had nine kills and five block assists for HSU. Allison Drobish added eight kills.

Humboldt State finishes the home portion of its season with a pair of matches in Lumberjack Arena this week. The Jacks take on Cal Poly Pomona on Friday and host Cal State San Bernardino Saturday.
