CHICO – Despite being scored on first, the Humboldt State men's soccer team came back with two unanswered goals and defeated the Chico State Wildcats 2-1 on Sunday.  The win improved the Jacks record to 6-10-2 overall and 5-8-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association matches.  The loss drops Chico State to 7-7-4, 4-6-4 in conference.

In six of its last eight games Humboldt State had seen its opponent score first, but in those eight games the Jacks record is 5-3. 

On Sunday, Wildcat Kyle Crain took a penalty kick at the 24:29 mark that found the back of the net and gave Chico State a 1-0 lead.

In the 40th minute HSU got the equalizer.  Scott Mariani crossed a ball that Peter Darquea headed in from five feet out to tie the score at 1-1.  It was the third goal of the season for Darquea, a freshman out of Apple Valley, Calif.  Mariani's assist, his third, tied him for the team lead with Tony Ramirez.

Chico State out shot the Jacks in the first period 5-3 but the sides went to the half in a 1-1 tie.

On the first shot of the second half, at the 60:02 mark, Roland Demombynes put a shot past Chico State keeper Michael Keohane for the eventual game winner.  Lloyd Sinclair played the ball to Demombynes who placed it in the left side of the net from six feet out. 

Demombynes' goal was his third of the season and second game winner.  For Sinclair, the assist was his first.

Keeper Kyle Verle earned his sixth win of the season, making three saves and allowing one goal.

The Jacks will play their final home game of the season on Friday as they host Sonoma State in Redwood Bowl.  Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
