ARCATA — Kept from the clean sweep, Cal Poly Pomona summoned its best effort in the fourth game of Friday's volleyball match to claim a 25-16, 25-23, 22-25, 25-16 victory over Humboldt State.
The win improved the Broncos' record to 10-14 overall and 7-10 in California Collegiate Athletic Association matches. Humboldt State dropped its fifth straight, and is 7-18 overall and 3-14 in the CCAA heading into Saturday's home finale.
Elizabeth Diaz and Kristin McNeese led the Cal Poly Pomona attack, finishing with 14 and 10 kills, respectively. Setter Jasmine Davis finished with 36 assists and 15 digs, one short of Audry Driscoll's match-high 16.
Looking for an offensive presence, the Jacks turned again to sophomore
Oceana Matsubu, who topped the team with 14 kills.
Allison Drobish and
Lesley Kalbrener each added eight kills, but the Jacks struggled with their hitting overall, posting a .084 percentage for the match.
The Lumberjacks kept the opening set tight, tying it at 13-13 on Drobish' attack. Cal Poly Pomona finished strong however, sandwiching a Jacks' attack error between kills from Taylr Kreutziger and Davis to claim the win.
Humboldt State gained momentum in the second set, only to fall short, but the third set was a solid one for the Jacks. They moved out to a commanding 21-12 lead, and survived a Broncos' rally to finally take the set on a CPP hitting error.
The final set was a reversal of fortunes, Cal Poly Pomona grabbing a 20-6 lead before HSU mounted a threat.
Emily Nuss helped the Jacks make it respectable with a pair of late service aces before the Broncos ended the evening.
Humboldt State plays its final match of the year in Lumberjack Arena on Saturday, hosting No. 3 nationally ranked CSU San Bernardino at 7 p.m. HSU will honor its two seniors,
Dani Nelson and
Danielle Wells prior to the match.
