LA JOLLA — No. 4 ranked UC San Diego defeated Humboldt State in three straight in the California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball season finale Saturday.
With the 25-17, 25-19, 25-20 loss, the Jacks finished their season 7-23 overall and 3-19 in the CCAA. UC San Diego improved its record to 28-2 and 20-2.
Oceana Matusubu finished a solid sophomore season with eight kills,
Dani Nelson added 15 digs and
Allison Drobish had five blocks to pace HSU. Sylvia Schmidt had 16 kills and Lauren Bradley had 12 with four block assists.
UC San Diego jumped out to a 8-3 advantage on Karen Reis's kill, and never trailed in claiming the first set. Matsubu's kill got the Jacks within five at 18-13, but the Tritons pulled away, ending it on a kill by Cara Simonsen.
Humboldt State hung within five points through most of the second set, closing to within four at 23-19 when the Tritons made an attack error. Elaine Chen served an ace to close out the set.
Matsubu's kill opened the second set, and after UCSD opened a 5-1 lead the Jacks battled back to take a 8-7 lead on Matsubu's ace. UCSD took over, opening up an eight-point lead and cruising to the finish on Reis' final kill of the evening.
