ROHNERT PARK – Three Jacks scored in double figures and an 18-3 run to start the second half propelled the Humboldt State women's basketball team to a 76-47 victory over the Seawolves of Sonoma State in both squads 2009-10 California Collegiate Athletic Association opener.
With the win HSU's record improves to 2-1 overall, 1-0 in CCAA play. Sonoma State suffers its first loss of the season and is also 2-1, 0-1 in conference play.
Box Score
Brittney Taylor, who scored eight of her game high 22 points in the run to start the second half, has now scored in double figures in each of the Jacks games. She also grabbed seven rebounds and had four steals.
Sonoma State slowed the game down in the first half. The Seawolves outscored HSU 7-0 on points off turnovers and 9-1 in second chance points. In addition, they had 11 made free throws to the Jacks two and took a 28-27 lead into the locker room.
“In the first half we didn't do a good job of blocking out and rebounding,” head coach
Joddie Gleason said. “We gave them to many second chances and with Paige (Peterson) and Bree (Halsey) in foul trouble it hurt on the boards.”
In the second half the Jacks came out with renewed purpose.
After Stephanie Barnes, who led Sonoma State with 13 points, got a layup in the first minute to extend the Seawolves lead to three, Peterson hit jumper and Taylor made two free throws to put the Jacks ahead by one.
Andrea Bobic and
Taylor Kilgore, who finished the night with 12 points, hit back-to-back 3-pointers to push the lead to seven points. Taylor scored the next eight Lumberjacks points giving the Jacks a 45-31 lead with 13 minutes, 47 seconds to play in the game.
Halsey, who had 16 points and five rebounds in the game, hit a layup with nine minutes, 10 seconds to go to give the Jacks a 59-43 advantage. HSU finished the night on a 17-4 run and won going away 76-47.
In the second half the Jacks outscored the Seawolves 18-0 off turnovers and 18-0 on the fast break. In addition, they had a 26-6 advantage on points in the paint.
“This game was really a tale of two halves,” Gleason said “We definitely played better defense in the second half and forced some turnovers. The points we scored off the turnovers ignited us. You can't run if you don't rebound and have the ball. In the second half we did a better job on the boards.
“We knew coming in that Sonoma State is tough on their home court. They try to change pace and slow the game down. In the first half we played their style and in the second half we played more our style.”
The Jacks return to action on Thursday, Dec. 3 as they host Cal State Los Angeles in Lumberjack Arena. The game, HSU's home opener and a CCAA matchup, is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The weekend wraps up on Dec. 5, with Cal State Dominguez Hills in town for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
