ARCATA – Finally able to play its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener, Humboldt State split its doubleheader with Sonoma State
Thursday, losing 4-1 in the first game and bouncing back with a 10-0 five-inning win.
With the split, the Jacks suffer their first loss of the season to be 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA while the Seawolves move to 4-7 overall and 2-4 in CCAA action.
The Jacks had a chance to get on the board first, in the series opener, with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth until the rally was abruptly ended when SSU Nikki Jaime caught a
Chrissy Motzny popup over her shoulder and then threw home to get pinch-runner
Megan Green out.
“If we would of scored there we would have probably gone on to win the game,” Humboldt State head softball coach Frank Cheek said. “It was a game changing play.”
The Seawolves got all the runs they would need a half-inning later when Danielle Lowe scored on a fielder's choice to open the scoring and pinch-hitter Carli Feuerbach singled home the second run.
Sonoma State added to its lead in the top of the seventh on RBI singles by Jaime and Simone Brandalise.
The Jacks got their lone run of the first game on Motzy's RBI single.
“We just didn't get it done when we had runners on base,” Cheek said. “If you want to win, you have to hit the ball and we didn't do that in the first game.”
The second game was a different story as the Jacks got on the board quick, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first, the first three coming with runners scoring on illegal pitches. Shortstop
Geneva Perrine knocked in the fourth run of the inning and Green scored when she headed home after Sonoma State tried to throw a runner out at second on a stolen base attempt.
It was more of the same for the Jacks in the second inning, scoring four runs on five hits.
Marissa Slattery doubled home a run and Felicia Vivieros recorded a RBI single.
Francesca West capped off the inning knocking in two with a double.
HSU right-hander
Jenna Anderson (3-0) pitched four shutout innings, giving up three hits while walking one and recording one strikeout.
“(Anderson) is throwing the ball well right now and did a pretty good job
today,” Cheek said. “I'm expecting more of the same
tomorrow.”
The final run of the game came on a Motzy double to left field in the bottom of the fourth.
Natalie Galletly, Vivieros and West all went 3-for-3 in game two.
Humboldt State will resume the last half of its four-game series against Sonoma State
tomorrow. First pitch of the doubleheader will be at noon.
