Jacks Split Series with Seawolves 2-2

Francesca West's walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh helped the Jacks win game one, 6-5
ARCATA – For the second consecutive day, the Humboldt State softball team split a doubleheader with Sonoma State, winning the opener 6-5 and dropping the second game 6-2 Friday.

The Jacks now stand at 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Seawolves move to 5-8 overall and 3-5 in the CCAA.

“(Sonoma State) played a well-executed weekend,” Humboldt State's head softball coach Frank Cheek said. “When a team out hits you 2-to-1, you're not going to do well.”

Much like yesterday, Sonoma State got on the board early in game one, scoring three runs in the first. The inning was capped off by a Alexandra Barenchi RBI double.

Humboldt State got one run back in the second inning on a RBI double by right fielder Lindsay Warren.

However Sonoma State quickly regained the momentum in the next half-inning, scoring two runs on a double by Brittany Martinez and a RBI single by Barenchi.

The Jacks were on the comeback trail once again in the bottom of the fourth when pinch hitter Joanna Schultz hit a two-run double. The following inning Felecia Vivieros hit a solo home run to cut the lead to one.

HSU completed its comeback in the bottom of the seventh when Marissa Slattery tied the game on a sacrifice fly and in the next at-bat, Francesca West won the game with a walk-off double.

Nichole Parada recorded her first victory of the season, pitching five innings in relief, giving up one run and five hits while striking out two.

“She's throwing her hat in the ring to become one of our starters,” Cheek said. “She's pitching really well right now.”

In the second game, unlike yesterday, Sonoma State was able to get to HSU starter Jenna Anderson. The Seawolves scored two runs in the first, three in the second, and one more in the third inning.

The Jacks got one back in the fourth when pinch runner Megan Green scored from second on an error by SSU second baseman Kayla Ledford.

Sonoma State increased its lead back to five in the top of the seventh on a solo home run by Ashley Britton. HSU scored one run of its own in the bottom half of the inning on a single by Natalie Galletly.

Humboldt State will play Monday and Tuesday on the road against Chico State. First pitch is scheduled for noon and 11 a.m., respectively.
