Jacks break record with 20th win

Ashley Shepherd recorded all of her nine points going 3-for-4 from behind the arc in HSU's 92-48 win over CSULA
ARCATA — For the 20th time this season, the Humboldt State women's basketball team registered a big victory, defeating Cal State Los Angeles, 92-48 Thursday to establish a program record for the most victories in a season.

"With 27 games in a season it's a challenge to earn 20 wins," Humboldt State's head women's basketball coach Joddie Gleason said. "It was a goal the team set before the season started and I'm happy they obtained it."

With the win, HSU improved to 20-6 overall, eclipsing the previous best total of 19 wins achieved by the 1993-94 Lumberjacks. HSU also moved to 15-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while Cal State L.A. dropped to 4-22 overall and 3-16 in league.

Jennifer Enos scored a season-high 17 points and Paige Peterson added 12 for Humboldt State, which claimed its seventh straight victory and 11th in the last 12 games. Katie Franci, Andrea Bobic and Ashley Shepherd each had nine points for the Jacks as all 13 players saw significant court time.

"I think Ashley gained confidence after hitting her first three and that helped her continue," Gleason said. "She's a good shooter."

Shatori Dearman led the Golden Eagles with 20 points and seven rebounds, but no other player came close to double-digit scoring.

"Dearman is a solid player," Gleason said. "She is an established deep post who has good moves. She's hard to get around and is a tough player."

A quick start gave Humboldt State all of the cushion it would need to keep the game out of reach. Halfway through the first half the Jacks had built a 25-12 lead, Peterson contributing a pair of three-pointers while the rest of the squad attacked the basket inside for points.

Turnovers by the Eagles gave the Jacks further momentum, helping them finish the half with a 16-1 run. In the final three minutes of the opening period CSULA committed five turnovers, and the Jacks made them pay with four three-pointers by four different players to take a 50-20 lead at the break.

Leading scorers Franci and Taylor sat out the majority of the second half, but the Jacks' bench kept the Lumberjacks on target. When Shepherd drained a three-pointer off an assist by Whitney Howard, the Jacks' lead ballooned to 77-41.

"Our team is very talented, special and unique," Gleason said. "They treat the team and community with respect and put effort into whatever they do. They truly care and respect for each other. They are determined to play their best at all times. I think our earlier heart-breakers made a difference and made them more focused and play their best."

Humboldt State's final regular season game, set for Saturday against Cal State Dominguez Hills, will feature a pregame ceremony honoring seniors Franci, Trisha Alaba, Enos and Kristina O'Keefe. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena.
