Jacks take BWI title, shut out two

Marissa Slattery went 3-for-3 with two RBIs in the Jacks 4-0 win over Central Washington
TURLOCK – The Humboldt State softball team won the Best of the West Invitational presented by Mizuno after shutting out Central Washington and host Cal State Stanislaus, Sunday.

The Lumberjacks hold a 4-0 record finishing the day with 12 hits, six runs and one error.

“I feel good about this weekend, we had three shutouts and one one-runner,” Humboldt State head softball coach Frank Cheek said. “We came down here not knowing about our pitching staff and they did a great job. Other than an error on Perrine the team played flawlessly. Our defense was pretty solid.”

Jenna Anderson registered her second win of the season in the Jacks 4-0 victory over Central Washington striking out three and giving up one hit and one walk.  The Wildcat's Katriina Reime picked up her first loss of the season giving up three earned runs and six hits in three innings. Linse Vlahovich came in relief striking out one batter and giving up one hit in CWU's final three innings.

With one out in the third inning Nikki Ketteringham singled and then advanced to second on Caitlin Klug's pop up to left field before Natalie Galletly singled to center field to place runners at first and third. Marissa Slattery then hit a walk-off double to increase the Jacks lead to 3-0. To secure HSU's win, Francesca West singled to right field for Slattery to score.

HSU started the game's scoring in the second as Slattery began the inning with a single to left field. West then reached on an error by the third baseman, advancing Megan Green, who went in to run for Slattery, to second. Advancing the runners on a sacrifice fly was Chrissy Motzny before Lindsay Warren's RBI pop up brought Green home.

Slattery finished the game going 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

Gracie Perez ended the Warriors' (5-1 overall) unbeaten streak taking her second win of the season in a 2-0 victory, striking out 13 batters, giving up four hits and no walks. Jessica Gaumnitz registered her first loss of the season for a 2-1 record, striking out three and giving up five hits.

West began the fifth inning with a double down the left field line, Green then came into run for West, before advancing to third off of Motzny's sacrifice bunt. Lindsay Warren then hit a two RBI homer to score the game's two runs.

“No. 12 ranked Stansilaus was undefeated until the played us and I feel really good about how we played,” Cheek said. “We hit the ball hard and so did they, we just got the big hit.”

The Lumberjacks begin their California Collegiate Athletic Association season hitting the road to take-on Chico State, Friday and Saturday.
