Jacks split day one with Gators

Geneva Perrine went 3-for-5 with one RBI in game one

SAN FRANCISCO - The Humboldt State softball team split its doubleheader with San Francisco State with a 7-5 win and 3-1 loss, Friday.

The Lumberjacks now hold a 15-7 California Collegiate Athletic Association record and 23-8 overall mark, while the Gators move to 6-12 in league play and 14-15 overall record.

After three scoreless innings in game one, the Jacks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth. With one out, Caitlin Klug doubled to right center and was followed with a Chrissy Motzny single to left field. With runners at second and third, Motzny stole second, Nikki Ketteringham singled through the right side to drive in the runners.

SF State cut the lead to one when Kelly McDonald crossed home plate off of a Kendra Wood single to left center in the fifth.

HSU answered back with a five-run inning during its next turn at bat. Motzny kicked off the inning with a double to left center and then advanced to third off of a Francesca West sacrifice bunt and was driven in off of Geneva Perrine's single. Next up to bat was Natalie Galletly who singled to right field, both runners advanced one base on the throw. Marissa Slattery loaded the bases after drawing a walk before Lindsay Warren doubled to left field for a triple RBI. Slattery capped off the scoring reaching home on an error by the catcher.

With hopes of a comeback, the Gators gave the Jacks a scare platting four runs but came up short in the seventh. Hit by the pitch Jessica Delgado led off the inning and advanced to second when McDonald walked. Danielle Chapman's and Karolyn Gubbine's back-to-back single RBIs brought Delgado and McDonald home with a double to left center and single up the middle, respectively. Kendra Wood finished the scoring rally with a two-run double.

Gracie Perez (9-3) picked up the win for the Jacks, striking out five batters in six plus innings. Anderson registered the save with one fanned batter and and no hits.

"I think that (Gracie) Perez threw well the first six innings," Humboldt State head softball coach Frank Cheek. "We were cruising along, running bases well, but Perez got into a little bit of trouble and I think (Jenna) Anderson did a good job to salvage the win when we got into trouble."

Ashley Jackson took the loss for the Gators giving up 11 hits, seven earned runs, three walks and struck out two.

Game two saw fewer runs and a different outcome. The Gators got on bored first with a single run in the first, when Lea Cardenas doubled to right field to drive in Gubbine, who reached base with a walk.

The Jacks were able to tie up the game in the top of the fourth as Megan Green, who pinch ran for Galletly, recorded HSU's lone run of the game off of a Klug single to right field.

Recording one run in the bottom of the fourth and fifth, the Gators sealed their win. Chapman and Alyssa Esquibel registered single RBIs with a sacrifice fly ball and double to left field, respectively.

Kendra Wood (2-4) recorded the win for SF State totaling nine strike outs and giving up seven hits and two walks, while Nichole Parada (10-3) collected the loss for the Jacks.

"(San Francisco State) is hot right now," Cheek said. "(Kendra) Wood threw a good game against us and when that happens there's nothing you can do. Tomorrow's game will be tough."

The two teams resume play tomorrow with the first pitch slated for 11 a.m.
