Lumberjacks split doubleheader with Wolves

ARCATA - The Humboldt State softball team split its non-league doubleheader against Western Oregon on Wednesday, beating the Wolves 10-2 and losing 10-2.

With the split the Lumberjacks hold a 33-14 overall mark and the Wolves posses a 17-19 record.

HSU opened up game one's scoring with a combined six runs in the first two innings. Marissa Slattery was the first to cross home plate off of a Lindsay Warren RBI sacrifice fly ball in the first. In the second inning, Francesca West hit a two-run blast, Natalie Galletly added an RBI double and Warren hammered a three-run homer to right field to put the Jacks up 6-0.

The Jacks added three more insurance runs in the fourth off of a Galletly two-run shot and Felicia Viveiros solo home run.

With the two outs and the bases loaded Jessica Hallmark singled down the right field line to drive in the Wolves' lone two runs of the game in the top of the fifth.

Galletly ended the game in HSU's next at bat with an RBI double to left field to force the mercy rule.

Freshman starter Nichole Parada (12-5) registered the win for the Jacks fanning six batters and walking one. Stephanie Albrecht picked up the loss for the Wolves giving up five hits and five earned runs in 1 2/3 innings.

Game two was held close until the top of the fourth when Western Oregon plated eight runs to take the game. Sasha Koki kicked off the scoring rally with an RBI single to center. Pinch hitter Jessie Lessard doubled to right to drive in another run. After an intentional walk to load the bases, Tierra-Lyn Cuba drew a walk forcing the third run of the inning. Hallmark continued the rally with a two-RBI single and was followed by three more one-run RBIs to secure the win.

WOU led off the game with a Tyler Sutherland home run to left field and added another run in the third off of a Cuba RBI double to the same spot.

The Jacks were able to tie up the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the first when pinch runner Megan Green crossed home plate on a wild pitch and then tie the game again, 2-2, in the third on a Slattery solo blast to center.

Jessica Wood improved her record to 8-7 with the Wolves win striking out two batters and giving up two hits. Jenna Anderson (5-5) picked up the loss for the Jacks striking out three and giving up four hits in 3 1/3 innings.

"We keep continuing to split at home," Humboldt State head softball coach Frank Cheek said. "We do not have a pitching staff that is consistent, obviously and we can't continue to ride the arm of our freshman (Parada)."

HSU takes the weekend off before traveling down south to face California Collegiate Athletic Association foe Cal State San Bernardino for a six-game series. The Jacks kick-off the series with a Friday, April 24, doubleheader at 1 p.m.
