Jacks fall hard to Sonoma State on the road

ROHNERT PARK — Humboldt State offered little resistance, falling to Sonoma State in three quick sets in a California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball match played Wednesday.

Losing 25-8, 25-14, 25-14, the Jacks saw their record slip to 5-6 on the season and 1-2 in league play. Sonoma State, ranked No. 13 nationally, remained unbeaten at 11-0, and is now 3-0 in the CCAA.

Sarah Illingworth paced the Seawolves with 12 kills while Ali Walker added 10 and also 11 digs. SSU posted an efficient .300 hitting percentage for the match while Humboldt State managed only .045.

The Lumberjacks took a 2-0 lead to start the match on a pair of kills by Dani Nelson. Nelson finished the evening with a team-high seven kills.

Sonoma State quickly turned the tide, reeling off 14 consecutive points behind the serve of Lindsay Brown, who had three aces in the run.

"They serve well, but it was more about us not being able to pass the ball," HSU head coach Sue Woodstra said.

In the second set the Jacks kept play competitive, trailing only 16-14 following a Seawolves' service error. But Sonoma State again took control, scoring the final nine points.

After falling behind early in the third set, HSU never came any closer than five points. The entire match lasted only 1 hour and 12 minutes.

Humboldt State faces two more tough matches on the road this week, traveling to play Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday and San Francisco State on Saturday.
