Lumberjack Notes
Only eight players saw the court for HSU last week, and all were employed in a variety of roles. That trend should continue this week with outside hitter Lesley Kalbrener still unavailable as she recovers from a knee injury. …Senior Danielle Wells moved into the No. 2 spot in the Jacks' career blocking category, now totaling 47 for the season and 321 blocks in her career. With the bulk of the season ahead, Wells will continue her pursuit of all-time leader Jennifer Lundeen, who slapped back 342. …Wells and Allison Drobish, who leads the squad with 54 blocks, have helped the Jacks maintain their CCAA leadership in blocking. HSU now had 121.5 total team blocks for an average of 2.34 per set. …HSU head coach Sue Woodstra sees this week's trip as the end of one phase of the season, with the bulk of the CCAA campaign remaining. "We have these two matches on the road, and then we'll settle in at home for awhile," Woodstra said. In fact, the Jacks play nine of 11 October matches in Lumberjack Arena.
Opponent Notes
Cal State San Bernardino has rolled through the season thus far, having lost only five sets in winning all its matches in 2009. …Junior hitter Jane Chafeh has dominated competition, averaging 5.05 kills per set, .01 behind league-leader Mackenzie Snyder of Chico State. Teammate Samantha Middleborn tops the CCAA in hitting percentage at .410. …Cal Poly Pomona split last weekend, defeating Cal State Stanislaus in four and losing in three to Chico State. The Broncos are 3-2 on their home court. Setter Jasmine Davis ranks sixth in the CCAA in assists with an average of 8.62 per set.
Woodstra's Words
“Cal State San Bernardino hasn't missed a beat from where it was last year. We just have to come out with both barrels blazing, figuring we have nothing to lose." … "Cal Poly Pomona is relying on some young players. They're a solid team, playing on their home court. We just have to be ready to play a complete match."
