Josh Suggs' goal in the 88th minute of regulation was the equalizer in a 1-1 tie against the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters Friday. Suggs' goal earned the Humboldt State men's soccer team its first point in California Collegiate Athletic Association action this season. The Jacks' record now stands at 1-6-2, 0-4-1 in the CCAA, while the the Otters are 1-5-2 overall and 1-2-2 in conference.
The match was physical from the outset with a total of seven yellow cards be handed out, two of which went to HSU. The sides combined for 16 fouls in the first half and 39 in all.
The Jacks' best chances came in the 11th minute when
Roland Demombynes blasted a shot from 18 yards left of the goal the slammed off the crossbar. In the battle in front of the net off the rebound,
Ben Vasser got off a shot that deflected off the post. The Jacks out-shot the Otters 6-3, but the half ended in a 0-0 tie.
The second half was dominated by the play of Cal State Monterey Bay and in the 60th minute the Otters converted on a penalty kick. After a Jacks' defender commited a foul inside the penalty area, Nate Torricelli converted the shot and gave the Otters a 1-0 lead.
With just over two minutes to play, senior
Zlatan Sahmanovic played the ball to Suggs, who dribbled to the center of the filed and hammered a shot from 12 yards out that found the back of the net to the far post.
The Jacks had the better chances in the overtimes, out-shooting the Otters 4-2, but couldn't get the winner and took the tie.
Suggs' goal was his team-leading fourth of the season. He and Vasser each took three shots with all of Suggs shots being on goal. Demombyes led the Jacks with four shots.
Kyle Verle made two saves and his record is now 1-6-2.
