HSU falls in four to Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA — A slow start proved too much to overcome in Humboldt State's volleyball's 25-19, 25-8, 21-25, 25-20 loss to Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday.

The loss drops the Lumberjacks to 6-9 overall and 2-5 in California Collegiate Athletic Association matches. Cal Poly Pomona improved its record to 6-8 in all games and 3-4 in conference.

Humboldt State was again ineffective in its hitting, registering only a .073 mark with 26 kills and 17 errors. Oceana Matsubu's eight kills and Callan Finney's seven paced the Jacks, but the pair also combined for nine attack errors.

Cal Poly Pomona was led by Elizabeth Diaz, who totaled 19 kills and Taylor Kreutziger, who knocked down 10.

Three service aces by Diana Lake helped the Broncos take command in the opening set, forging a 24-16 lead. The Jacks stormed back, scoring three straight points before a kill by Lindsey Poulos finished the set in CPP's favor.

In the second set the Jacks barely offered any resistance, hurting themselves with repeated errors. Poulos stayed hot, putting down consecutive points to help the Broncos ease away to victory.

Regaining their focus, the Jacks grabbed an early lead in the third set, moving up 10-5 after a couple of Matsubu kills. Cal Poly kept the set tight, but Matsubu served an ace for set point and a service error by the Broncos gave it to the Jacks.

Humboldt State battled tough through a competitive fourth set, and trailed only 16-15 when Cal Poly Pomona began its drive towards victory. A 9-2 run ended any HSU hopes for the comeback.

Following five straight road matches, the Jacks return home this week for CCAA matches on Friday and Saturday.
