Jacks fall in four to Cal State East Bay

ARCATA - After dropping the first two sets and taking the third, Humboldt State was unable to maintain its momentum and fell to the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay in four 25-20, 25-19, 20-25, 25-14 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball match on Friday.

The loss drops HSU to 1-14 overall, 1-11 in league play while Cal State East Bay improved to 13-4 and 8-4 in conference.

Three Poineers paced CSUEB's attack with double-digit kills. Katie Allen led the way with 16 and added 10 digs.  Sukhjit Athwal had 14 and Kitona Offord contributed 11. Lauren Massa was the team's leader, defensively, with 21 digs while K.C. Walsh and Roxanne Neely added 12 and 11 respectively.

Oceana Matsubu led HSU, putting away nine kills on the evening and adding 13 digs. Freshman libero Brooke Ferguson and Channel Washington had 12 digs each and Jo Arzadon added 10 for the Jacks.

In the first set the Poineers built a 22-14 lead before HSU went on a 6-to-1 run.  The spurt was highlighted by an Arzadon ace that made the score 23-20, but a pair of errors ended the Jacks threat and CSUEB took the first set 25-20.

The second set saw the Pioneers build an 8-4 lead before Humboldt State evened it up at 9-9.  Cal State East Bay slowly pulled away and took the second set 25-19.

Set three featured four lead changes.  Early on the Pioneers build an 8-4 lead, but HSU battled back to tie it up at 10-10.  With the score tied again at 11-11, the Jacks went on a 5-to-0 run taking a 16-11 lead.  Cal State East Bay came right back and tied it up at 16-16. Humboldt State went on a quick four point run and cruised to a 25-20 win in the set.

The final set saw CSUEB jump out to a 6-1 lead.  They never looked back and won the set 25-14 and the match 3-1.

The Jacks return to action on Saturday night when they face the UCSD Tritons.  The match begins at 7 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena.
