HSU downed 3-0 at Sonoma State

SANTA ROSA – Giving up multiple goals in the final 22 minutes, the Humboldt State men's soccer team fell to the Sonoma State Seawolves 3-0 on Sunday.

With the win, Sonoma State improves its overall record to 10-5-1 and is 8-5-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action.  The loss drops the Jacks to 3-10-3 overall, 3-9-2 in conference play.

The game had to be moved to an all-weather facility, Trione Field in Santa Rosa, due to Seawolf Soccer Field being unplayable after several days of continuous rain all in Sonoma County.

HSU opened the first half determined to impose its will on the Seawolves.  They took five shots in the first 16 minutes and put three on frame but none got past SSU's keeper Juan Sosa.  Sonoma State got eight shots off in the half.  Kyle Verle, the HSU keeper, made saves on each of the three that were on goal.  The sides went to the half 0-0.

The teams opened the second half trading shots until the 69th minute.

At the 68:30 mark Sonoma State's Brandon Dela Cruz received a cross from Trevor Hurst.  He got the ball right on the doorstep of the Jacks goal and shot it home for a 1-0 lead. Kelly Davila was credited with assists on what was Dela Cruz's second goal of the season.

Almost exactly 10 minutes later, at the 78:28 mark, Davila scored on a header.  Nico Spann and Erick Degado assisted on the score.  Two minutes after that Hurst scored right on the HSU goal line for the final margin, 3-0.

For the match, SSU outshot the Lumberjacks 17-to-9.  Verle made six saves on nine shots on goal.  Sosa saved all five shots he faced.

Josh Suggs led the Lumberjacks with three shots.  Lyle Menk took two shots, both on goal and Quintin Aguilar had one attempt, which was on frame.
