Humboldt State's struggles continue in road loss

LOS ANGELES — Despite gaining momentum in each set, Humboldt State couldn't build enough steam to pull out a win, falling to Cal State Los Angeles, 25-14, 25-20, 27-25 in California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball action Friday.

Cal State L.A. snapped a four-game losing streak, improving its record to 8-6 overall and 5-5 in the CCAA. The Lumberjacks remained winless, falling to 0-14 on the season and 0-10 in league matches.

Friday's match began with a lethargic Lumberjack squad quickly falling behind, 16-5 in the opening set. Jo Arzadon served an ace to help the Jacks get going late in the opener, and gather some momentum heading into the second set.

HSU maintained contact throughout the second set, pulling within two points at 20-18 on a kill by Taylor Manuel. Mary Laupepa contributed two kills to help the Eagles put away the set with a 5-2 run.

The Lumberjacks led 13-11 in the third set, but the Eagles scored seven straight points and appeared to be ready to pull away to a comfortable win. Trailing 20-15, the Jacks rallied for four consecutive points of their own, with another Arzadon kill making it a one-point set.

Matsubu served four straight points to give the Jacks a 24-23 lead and earn set point, before the Eagles turned it around to take a 25-24 lead on two kills from Zuzana Cizova. Chelsea Hamilton's successful attack put the match away for Cal State L.A.

Arzadon put in another balanced effort for HSU, finishing with five kills and only one hitting error. She also topped the team with 15 assists and 11 digs, adding a pair of blocks.

Cizova had 14 kills, Hamilton 13 and Natalia Gonzalez 11 for Cal State L.A. Stefanie Gay paced the Eagles with 17 digs and Marquis Mora had six block assists.

Humboldt State will be back on the court Saturday, seeking its first win of 2010 when the Jacks take on Cal State Dominguez Hills. First serve in Carson is scheduled for 7 p.m.
