CARSON — Brooke Ferguson's service ace broke Humboldt State's long drought, finishing off a four-set match win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in a California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball match Saturday.

The victory, HSU's first of the year, improved the Jacks' record to 1-14 overall while moving them to 1-10 in the CCAA. Cal State Dominguez Hills fell to 1-15 overall and 1-10 in league play.

Oceana Matsubu had 14 kills and Taylor Manuel added 12 to fuel the Jacks' offensive efforts. Jo Arzadon had 39 assist and a team-high digs, while Allison Drobish topped the team with eight block assists.

HSU dropped a tight first set, surrendering a 23-20 lead. Denise Devine put down two critical kills to help the Toros claim the victory.

After trailing early in the second set, HSU turned to the hitting tandem of Taylor Manuel and Callan Finney, who both had kills in a stretch of five straight Lumberjack points that turned the set. Another kill by Manuel and a hitting error on the Toros finished it off in the Jacks' favor.

The Lumberjacks prevailed in another close contest, taking the third set with a pair of clutch points at the end. Manuel put away a clean set from Arzadon to give HSU a 25-24 lead, and Bailey Kotas served an ace to finish the set.

HSU wasn't threatened in the fourth set, grabbing an early lead and pulling away to the win. An Arzadon kill and Ferguson's ace sealed the Jacks' first victory of 2010.

Humboldt State returns to Arcata for two home CCAA matches this week. The Lumberjacks will take on Cal State East Bay on Friday and UC San Diegon on Saturday in Lumberjack Arena.
