ARCATA –– The Humboldt State Women's Basketball team completed the CCAA/PacWest Challenge in style, defeating Dominican University, 76-52.
Humboldt saw another key game from junior, Kayla Williams. Williams earned an all-tournament selection after her game-tying shot in Saturday's victory and consistant play, again, tonight. She added 16 points for the Jacks.
“We gave Kayla the opportunity in the starting line-up for the first time,” said Humboldt head coach Joddie Gleason. “She stepped up and embraced the opportunity and took advantage of it,” she added.
Gleason and the Jacks continue to see consistent play from junior, Bree Halsey. Halsey brought down 17 rebounds on both ends of the floor and added 8 points to the board. Halsey was named tournament Most Valuable Player.
“Bree is a great rebounder,” said Gleason. “Her sheer athleticism and competitiveness is what gets her the boards,” she added.
The back-to-back win is something Gleason is happy her team has under their belt before heading into another tough match-up against UC San Diego on Sunday. The Jacks will not see play from starter, Caitie Richards. Richards exited last night's game with a broken hand and it is undetermined when she will resume play.
“This is a big loss. Caitie worked the hardest this summer and is one of our creators on offense. She is an outstanding outside shooter and can also attack the basket and set people up,” commented Gleason.
Kelsey Janusch was the only player from Dominican to score in double digits adding 11 points. Humboldt's high scorer was Lisa Petty who recorded a season high 17. The Jacks will travel to LaJolla for Sunday's game against UC San Diego.
