Lumberjacks pounded at UCSD

LA JOLLA – Hoping to finish the regular season on a high note and gain some momentum heading into the California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament, the Humboldt State women's basketball team were hammered by the No. 14 ranked UC San Diego Tritons 86-51 on Friday night.

The win improves the Tritons' record to 24-3 overall, 19-3 in CCAA play.  The Jacks fall to 16-10, 14-8 in conference action.

Box Score

UCSD finishes the year as CCAA regular-season champions and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament.  HSU and Cal State Monterey Bay end the season with identical 14-8 conference records. The Jacks earn the No. 4 seed, and a home game in the first round of the conference tournament, by way of a tiebreaker.

UCSD outshot the Jacks 47-to-31 percent for the game, nearly doubling the baskets scored 30-to-16.  The Tritons also dominated the boards grabbing 48 rebounds to HSU's 27 and on the offensive glass they had a 22-10 advantage.

Brittney Taylor had 15 points and grabbed five rebounds in just 16 minutes of play for HSU.  Both were team highs.  She was the only Lumberjack to score in double figures.

For UCSD, Chelsea Carlisle had 20 points in 23 minutes of play and Tiffany Hunter scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

The Jacks, now losers of six of their last eight games, tried to change things up by making five player substitutions throughout the contest.  For the first nine minutes it seemed to work as HSU built a five-point, 15-10 lead.

But UCSD woke up and went on a 32-10 run, 14 point coming from Carlisle, over the next 11 minutes to take a 42-25 lead into halftime.

Two quick buckets to open the second half pushed the UCSD advantage to 21 points.  They eventually stretched the lead to as many as 37 points and cruised to an 86-51 win.

The Lumberjacks will host Cal State Monterey Bay on Tuesday in Lumberjack Arena win a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.  It will be the third time the team have met this year.  In the previous meetings, the visiting team has come away with the win.  HSU won 65-57 in Seaside in January and CSUMB defeated the Jacks 73-59 in early February.
