The loss in its home debut left Humboldt State still seeking its first win of the season. The Jacks are 0-9 overall and dropped to 0-5 in the CCAA.

Cal State San Bernardino improved its record to 8-1 while extending its league mark to 5-0.

Humboldt State kept the matches tight throughout the early going in each set, only to surrender big runs to the Coyotes following the midway point. The final scores were 25-17, 25-17, 25-13.

"We tried to compete against a very good opponent, but we made some young mistakes," HSU head coach Sue Woodstra said. "We let some of their streaks get us down."

Samantha Middleborn led the Coyotes' offense with nine kills, and Mercedes Winchester had eight kills in nine attempts for the visitors. Kelcie Tolan totaled 10 digs for CSUSB.

Oceana Matsubu carried the bulk of HSU's attack, putting away eight kills in 25 attempts. Toni Kroeker had six kills and a .364 hitting percentage, whle Brooke Ferguson had eight digs to top the Jacks' defense.

"We made a lot of good touches after that first game," Woodstra said. "Defensively, we were also better than we've been in recent matches."

The Jacks will try again to get into the winning column Saturday when they host Cal Poly Pomona at 7 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena.
