Jacks fall in final seconds

ARCATA - A Triton go-ahead three pointer edged UC San Diego past the Jacks in a California Collegiate Athletic Association battle at Lumberjack Arena.  The Jacks ended their winning streak after falling to UCSD, 63-61.

“I feel better about this game than our win on Thursday against (Cal State) East Bay,” said HSU head coach Joddie Gleason.  “It hurts to get the loss but we played a solid game and we will be able to sleep after this one,” she added.

The Jacks opened the game with a 6-0 run before quickly being challenged by the conference rivals and entered the second half with just a three-point edge, 30-27.

“They (UCSD) made adjustments at half and motivated Lauren (Freidenberg) who had a great second half,” said Gleason.

The Jacks held a one-point lead with 30 seconds to play but a Daisy Feder base-line three with 14 seconds was the final score for the night and the hopes of the Jacks came to an end.

Humboldt was able to hold CCAA standout Chelsea Carlisle to just nine points but was unable to cease the dominance of Freidenberg who contributed 20 points, 14 in the second half, and 17 rebounds.

The Jacks were led by Kayla Williams and Bree Halsey, each with 10 points.

Humboldt will return to action on Thursday night at Lumberjack Arena against Cal State Stanislaus.
