Otters take advantage of opportunities, shut out Jacks

Box Score SEASIDE – Humboldt State was unable to convert any of its ten shots as the Jacks suffered a 3-0 defeat to Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday afternoon. The Jacks entered the match with momentum after defeating Cal State East Bay Friday night, but was forced to settle for a split on the weekend's road trip.

With the loss, the Jacks drop to 3-10 overall, 3-9 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play, while the Otters improve to 6-6-1 overall, and 6-5-1 in conference action.

"I was really pleased with our play for the first 30 minutes, but unfortunately in that time span we could just not buy a goal,” said head coach C.J. Johnson. “We got in and attacked at the flanks, we just couldn't get any on frame and the keeper came up with some key saves.”

The momentum turned against HSU as the Otters took control in the 43rd minute on a goal by Pana Vasquez, giving CSUMB a 1-0 at the half, and taking the wind out of the Jacks' sails. Vasquez struck again in the 47th minute on a header off a far cross to extend the lead to 2-0.

"We got countered on and unfortunately we weren't aware of what was going on at the back post,” said Johnson. “It was a really nice service and a really great goal on their behalf, but I wish our boys would have communicated and been more aware. That was a very unfortunate breakdown for us."

Both teams continued to battle, but a red card ejection left the Lumberjacks down a man with just under 20 minutes left in the match. The Otters took advantage of the player down, adding a late goal in the 79th minute to seal the game.

"The last 30 minutes of the game, we started to get dangerous again and got a lot of opportunities,” said Johnson. “Even going a man down—that certainly hurt us getting back in the match—we still were throwing numbers forward and that's how they got their third goal."

The Jacks looking to bounce back are back in action this coming weekend as they are back on the road to take on UC San Diego and Cal State San Bernardino.
