No. 2 Coyotes drop Jacks in three

SAN BERNARDINO ­– Although improving in each set, Humboldt State came up short against No. 2-ranked Cal State San Bernardino Friday night. The Coyotes took the match in three sets (25-13, 25-16, 25-19), never letting the Jacks really get their footing on the night.

The victory improves the Coyotes to 23-0 overall, 18-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play, while the loss drop Humboldt State to 8-15 overall, 5-14 in conference action, giving CSUSB the sweep of the series.

The Jacks fought an uphill battle as they trailed the entire first set, eventually dropping the set 13-25. In the second set, Humboldt State jumped ahead 1-0 on a kill by Alexa Rosendale assisted by Bailey Kotas, but unfortunately for the Jacks, this would be the only time they would take the lead in the match against the unbeaten Coyotes.

Humboldt State did not lack any effort as the Jacks improved each game, playing the Coyotes in their closest game during set three, but ultimately fell 25-19. Samantha Middleborn and Morgan Carty led the attack for Cal State San Bernardino, totalling 24 combined kills to help the Coyotes hit at a .289 percent.

Oceana Matsubu and Rosendale continued their solid play for the Jacks as Matsubu contributed 11 kills and Rosendale added 6. Brooke Ferguson led the defensive attack for the Jacks as she had a game-high 19 digs.

The Coyotes played solid defense throughout with twelve different players contributing to digging game. The Jacks look to bounce back Saturday night as they take on No. 17-ranked UC San Diego at 7pm. The Jacks were defeated by UC San Diego in three games (25-19, 25-19, 25-20) in their earlier meeting this season.
