Seawolves defeat Lumberjacks 3-0

Box Score ROHNERT PARK – Humboldt State could not find a rhythm offensively and was outshot 23-4 in a 3-0 loss Sunday afternoon at Sonoma State, playing the last 27 minutes a man down from a red card ejection.

The loss drops the Lumberjacks to 0-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association conference, 0-3 overall, while the Seawolves improve to 2-0 in conference, 3-1 overall. Humboldt State returns home to host Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, Sept. 16, at 3 p.m. at College Creek Field.

Sonoma State attacked quickly and scored its first goal in the 12th minute when Taylor Varnadore found Justin Ferreira waiting at the back post to put the ball past Kyle Verle. The Seawolves continued to dominate much of the action in the first half and only allowed one Humboldt State shot from Zach Hammond in the 35th minute.

Ray Lind gave the Lumberjacks a scoring chance in the 68th minute, which could have tied the game at 1-1, but Sonoma State's goalkeeper Andrew Ball made the save to retain the shutout.

Jordan Zogg was ejected in the 63rd minute, off his second yellow card of the match, giving the Seawolves a player advantage for the last 27 minutes of play and putting pressure on the Jacks' defense.

The defense tried to fight off the Sonoma State offense, but could not hold the Seawolves to just one goal. Varnadore and Ferreira combined once more, along with Trevor Hurst, to put the score at 2-0 in the 71st minute. Just seven minutes later, Varnadore got his second goal of the game off a corner from Brian Angel, the ninth goal the Jacks have given up off a set piece—corner kick, throw in or free kick.

Freshman Braxton Griffin tried to spark the Lumberjack offense in the 82nd minute with a header on goal, but once again Ball was there to make the save.
