Jacks host 'Cats in first round of conference tournament

ARCATA – In the first round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association, Humboldt State will host Chico State Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

After predicted to finish fifth in the CCAA, the Jacks finished tied for second with Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Monterey Bay. Humboldt State enters the contest 19-7 overall and 15-7 in conference. Chico State finishes the season tied for fifth with Cal State Los Angeles, standing 17-9 overall and 14-8 in the CCAA.

This marks the fifth year Humboldt State has made it to the CCAA Championship Tournament. In 2010, the Jacks won the tournament after defeating Chico State in the final 85-55. Last year HSU lost to Cal State San Bernardino 68-60 in the first round.

The Wildcats have made the post-season conference tournament since the 2007-08 season when they claimed the title by beating UC San Diego 69-63. Last year Chico State lost to the Tritons in the first round of the CCAA tournament 76-71.

Three Lumberjacks average double-figures, led by Lisa Petty with 13.8 points per game. Kayla Williams and Caitie Richards follow closely behind, averaging 11.8 and 10.9 ppg, respectively. Not only can Williams score points for HSU, she also has a knack for finding the open players and leads the team in assists, needing one assist more to break 100. Bree Halsey continues to lead the posting effort for the Jacks and averages 9.3 rebounds per game.

As a team, the Wildcats have been heating up, winning their last five games and average 67.2 points per game while limiting their opponents to just under 62 points on average. Synchro Bull and Jazmine Miller lead the attack for the Chico State Wildcats, but no one player stands out in the rebounding column. Bull averages 13.4 ppg and 5.7 rpg, while Miller averages 10.5 ppg and 4.1 rpg.

The two teams split this year during the regular season, with each team grabbing a victory at home. Humboldt State beat Chico State 72-62 in Lumberjack Arena, but fell to the Wildcats 90-67 in Chico.
