Women's basketball returns to Lumberjack Arena

Lisa Petty continues to climb in the HSU record books
ARCATA – It was the best of teams. It was the worst of teams.

It may not be the Tale of Two Cities, but the women's basketball match-ups this weekend in Lumberjack Arena will bring the teams at the top and bottom of the California Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAA). Humboldt State will take on the top team, Cal State Chico (10-2 CCAA, 14-2), on Thursday and the bottom team, Cal St. Stanislaus (1-11 CCAA, 2-15), on Saturday. Both games tip off at 5:30 p.m.

Humboldt State has fallen closer to the bottom than top, but there is plenty of opportunity to climb the standings with 10 games remaining in the CCAA schedule, including six in Lumberjack Arena.

“The team is obviously disappointed after every loss,” said HSU Head Coach Joddie Gleason. “We prepare to win, and they are playing hard. But they are resilient, and they will bounce back.”

Freshman Tiana Maxwell played well against Cal St. Dominguez Hills, leading the team with eight rebounds and hitting four 3-pointers on her way to a career-high 14 points.

“Tiana had a great weekend,” Gleason said. “She is feeling more and more comfortable with the speed of play and what we are trying to do offensively and defensively.”

More Comments from Head Coach Joddie Gleason
“Chico starts three guards and then brings another guard off the bench. They have four guards who can start at any time. And they are all athletic and savvy veterans. You can't focus on any of them because any of them can go off on any given night. We need to play solid team defense against Chico and limit their transition points. ... We always have good games against Stanislaus. Their post play with Godde has been a challenge for us. There is no easy game in our conference.”
