Mack High standout Farris signs with Lumberjacks

Accompanied by his parents, Parker Farris signs his National Letter of Intent to play for the HSU men's basketball team.
ARCATA — Dipping into the well of local talent again, Humboldt State head men's basketball coach Steve Kinder announced Thursday the signing of McKinleyville High's Parker Farris to a National Letter of Intent.

"The Lumberjack basketball program is excited about signing another quality local talent in Parker Farris," Kinder said. "His value as a good student and a gifted basketball player will be well received in the Lumberjack Basketball family."

Joining the Jacks following three years as an All-County performer for the Panthers, Farris is Humboldt State's first signing for the 2013-14 season. He'll play alongside former Arcata High standout Thomas Witzel, who developed into a key player for HSU as a freshman last year.

Playing point guard for McKinleyville High School, Farris earned his second straight selection to the Times-Standard Humboldt-Del Norte All-Star first team as a senior. He was also named to the HDN Conference Big 5 All-Star team selected by a vote of the league's coaches.

At 6-4, Farris gives the Lumberjacks a triple-threat with the ability to penetrate, shoot from the perimeter and distribute the basketball.

"Parker brings a multitude of weapons to the basketball court," Kinder said. "He has the ability to see the floor and complete passes and stretch the opponent's defensive pressure by stepping out beyond the 3-point line. His long, athletic frame allows him to defend many positions.  Parker is a pure basketball player with natural instincts for the game."

Players from McKinleyville High School have been key contributors to the Lumberjack program, past and present. Chris Pender played an increasing role for HSU just last season, and will be back again for 2013-14. In the 90s, Scott Mather was among the Mack High standouts starring for Humboldt State.  After transferring from College of the Redwoods, Issac Gildea played for HSU from 2000-2002, and still holds the Jacks' records for 3-pointers in a season (96) and single game (10).
