ARCATA, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt Athletics and Head Men's Basketball Coach DJ Broome have announced the promotion of John Seavey to Associate Head Coach following a successful first season with the Lumberjacks program.
Seavey joined Broome's inaugural staff ahead of the 2025–26 season and made an immediate impact across multiple areas of the program, including on-court development, academic success, and student-athlete retention. Under the staff's leadership, the Lumberjacks posted a 3.07 team GPA while also building a strong foundation for long-term success within the program.
"I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to step into the role of associate head coach here at Humboldt," said Seavey. "I'm thankful to be part of such a great program, with a dedicated staff, and an outstanding group of student-athletes. I'm excited for what's ahead."
In their first season together, Broome and his staff of John Seavey and Kevin Johnson Jr. guided Cal Poly Humboldt to one of its most successful campaigns in recent history. The Lumberjacks were picked eighth in the CCAA Preseason Poll but exceeded expectations with a third-place finish in conference play—the program's highest finish since the 2014–15 season. Humboldt also advanced to its first CCAA Championship game appearance since 2016 and earned its first NCAA Tournament berth since that same season.
"Seavey is a huge asset to our program," said Broome. "He plays a huge role in every aspect and is deserving of the elevation in title."
Seavey's promotion reflects his integral role in the program's continued upward trajectory of Cal Poly Humboldt men's basketball under Broome's leadership.
