CSU San Bernardino Nets Second Half Pair to Overtake HSU

Boxscore
ARCATA, Calif. – In another tough California Collegiate Athletic Association match, Cal State San Bernardino netted a pair of second half goals to overtake Humboldt State men's soccer, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon.

The Coyotes (6-4/2-4 CCAA) opened the scoring at 50:01 and added the second goal 18 minutes later. The Lumberjacks (8-3-1/4-2 CCAA) had plenty of opportunities with an 18-12 shot advantage and failed to take advantage of five quality-scoring chances in the final 12 minutes of play.

"Today was another tough loss for us. Our guys played very well for the majority of the game and this weekend was a perfect example of just how difficult our conference is," said Jacks' Head Coach Fred Jungemann. "Cal State San Bernardino fought very hard today and showed us just how quickly fortunes can turn. We have learned some hard lessons this weekend, but it will make us stronger as we move forward."

In a scoreless match, CSU San Bernardino's Jacob Davies heaved a long thrown in from the right sideline to the middle of the box. Tony Lo took the pass and saw his attempt deflected into the net by Daniel Lopez at 50:01.

HSU put two shots on goal, but the visitors added a second goal 18 minutes later. The Coyotes' Larry Llamas took a long pass down the field and booted it into the left side of the net for the 2-0 lead.

The Jacks produced a flurry around the visiting goal in the final minutes. On HSU's best sequence of the match, Connor Wilkinson drove a corner kick, which Kenji Murao headed wide, but it stayed in play. Jacob Bechtel kicked the header rebound only to have it blocked. Wilkinson worked his way into the play and belted the blocked rebound off the crossbar at 85:09.

Chuck Pitts fired one last strike at Coyotes' keeper Roberto Gonzalez, who saved the attempt with 1:25 left in the match.

In his first collegiate start, HSU's Chris Bean stopped a pair of shots.

HSU will travel to face Cal State Dominguez Hills starting at 7 p.m. next Friday night
