CARSON, Calif. – In a span of eight minutes over two halves, Cal State Dominguez Hills found the net twice and prevailed over Humboldt State men's soccer, 2-0, on Friday night.
The Toros' Jaime Rios converted a penalty kick with 37 seconds left in the opening half, before Joey Chica added the second goal at 51:18 of half number two. The home defense held the Lumberjack offense to two shots and one shot on goal.
"Tonight was a very difficult game for us," said
Fred Jungemann, HSU's Head Coach. "Cal State Dominguez Hills played very well from start to finish and we were never able to establish ourselves in the game."
HSU (8-4-1/4-3 CCAA) fell for the third time in as many matches, while Cal State Dominguez Hills (7-6/5-2 CCAA) won its third match in a row.
The Jacks earned eight corner kicks including five in the second half, but they were unable to score on a set piece.
At 21:31,
Chuck Pitts fired the visitors' lone shot in the first half.
Dominic Pacheco drove a second half shot on goal (72:07) which the Cal State Dominguez Hills goalie saved for the other attempt.
"We don't have long to sit around and feel sorry for ourselves, as we must regroup quickly for another difficult match on Sunday at Cal State Los Angeles," said Jungemann.
At Jesse Owens Track, HSU will look to rebound against No. 20 Cal State Los Angeles Sunday at 2 p.m.
