LOS ANGELES — No. 16-ranked Cal State Los Angeles found the net three times in the first half and added a final goal late to defeat Humboldt State women's soccer, 4-0, Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles (13-1-1/8-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association) received two goals by Joanna Espinoza to lead the home team past the Lumberjacks (6-8/1-7 CCAA).
"Cal St LA may be the most complete team we have seen so far. They are talented and very deep," said HSU Head Coach Paul Karver. "The goals and the score don't show how hard we played. We had anumber of chances to make it close, but just didn't get it done." HSU's
Colette Behen fired the match's first shot on goal (2:06), which Cal State Los Angeles' goalie Yi Du saved it.
After the Golden Eagles' first goal,
Maddi Null hit a shot also saved by the home keeper at 30:13. Less than two minutes later, Espinoza's penalty kick made it a 2-0 Eagles' lead
Espinoza made it a 3-0 Cal State Los Angeles favor right before the half at 40:22.
HSU came out of the half and outplayed the home team for the opening 20 minutes and recorded the first four shots. Behen kicked a shot high (52:49), Null hit the crossbar (54:33),
Lizzie Mitchell's kick was saved (61:10) and Behen added a second shot wide of the mark (65:33).
"We made a few changes in the second half that really allowed us to e plot a few things. It forced a few players to play in different roles but it was effective," said Karver. In the 81
st minute, the Eagles added a late final score for the 4-0 final.
HSU keeper
Amber Woolcock recorded six saves.
"We have three games left we we are determined to stop this streak before the final whistle blows," said Karver. The Jacks first of the three remaining games will be Friday. HSU will face Cal Poly Pomona Friday afternoon at 12:30 p.m.
