ARCATA, Calif. – In a wild final nine minutes of regulation, Humboldt State men's soccer and UC San Diego combined to score three times for a 2-2 score and eventual tie after two scoreless overtimes Sunday afternoon.
For over 53 minutes, the Lumberjacks (8-6-2/4-5-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association) enjoyed a 1-0 lead after
Ryan Connor's header at 28:23.
UC San Diego (9-4-4/4-2-4 CCAA) tied the match the first time on Kuba Waligorski's goal at 81:49.
Chuck Pitts put HSU back in front six minutes later (87:39), only to have the visitors' Uly De la Cal deflect a free kick with 37 seconds left in the second half for a 2-2 deadlock.
"Our game, like life, can be exceptionally cruel at times. Our guys gave everything they had, but the ball and some questionable decisions, did not bounce our way," said HSU Head Coach
Fred Jungemann. "These guys have given every ounce they can to this team and season. They certainly do not deserve the cruelties fate has dealt them over this past six games."
With the tie result, HSU falls to seventh place in the CCAA standings with 13 points. Cal State Stanislaus jumped HSU into sixth place with 14 points after defeating Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-1 in double overtime, Sunday.
The Jacks celebrated seven seniors prior to Sunday's match. HSU honored Connor,
Javier Torres,
Andre Bernal,
Kenji Murao,
Quintin Aguilar,
Austin Swartz and
Michael Powell, who was a four-year team member but unable to play this fall.
Connor Wilkinson and
Dominic Pacheco had the Jack assists on the two home goals. Torres saved two Triton shots in goal.
HSU outshot UC San Diego, 16-8, with a 12-3 edge in the final 65 minutes of action.
"All we can do now is go to Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday, and play our hearts out one more time and hope we get some help for a change," said Jungemann.
HSU faces Cal State Monterey Bay in a 4:30 p.m. match on Thursday afternoon to complete the regular season schedule.
