SEASIDE, Calif. — The Lumberjacks' goal drought ended in a big way Thursday afternoon. Humboldt State women's soccer found the net three times in a late-game scoring flurry, but it was not enough to defeat Cal State Monterey Bay in a 4-3 loss Thursday afternoon.
Trailing 3-0 after the opening 62 minutes of play, the Jacks'
Taylor McMillin (62:13) ended her team's scoring drought with a goal at 62:13. HSU was not done as
Maddi Null (65:29) and Sammie Morris (66:15) both back of the found the net over the next three minutes to tie the match, 3-3.
At 87:22, the Otters' Sierra Townsend netted her second goal of the match for the game-winner and ended the Jacks' comeback.
HSU finished its season at 6-11 overall, a three-win improvement from a year ago, and 1-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
"We finally got things going in the second half and returned back to the way we played during the first seven games. Midway through the year, we lost ourselves and in the second half today we were found again," said HSU Head Coach
Paul Karver. "We always knew that one goal would lead to more, but unfortunately, we were a little too late, but the second 45 minutes was a fantastic way to build for next year."
With a three goal deficit,
Niccole Mullins played a through ball to McMillin, who dribbled and shot underneath the diving Cal State Monterey goalkeeper to make it 3-1.
McMillin kept the heat on the Otters as the junior found Null from 25 yards out. Null blasted the ball over the goalie's head and cut the Otters lead to a single goal, 3-2.
In her final match,
Lizzie Mitchell recorded her final collegiate point by passing the ball to Morris for her first goal of the season at 66:15 to tie the match, 3-3.
HSU's
Amber Woolcock made four saves and
Megan Wade had two of her own in the second half.
