ARCATA, Calif. – In a Lumberjack single-game record-tying effort,
Jae Shin downed eight 3-pointers and totaled 26 points to help Humboldt State women's basketball topple Dominican, 91-74, Saturday night.
Leading 7-3 in the opening three minutes, Shin hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give HSU (4-1) a 13-5 advantage. The Jacks' Dani Gaumer scored the first five second-half points of a 7-0 run to open a 45-29 advantage. Dominican cut the margin to seven points, 65-58, with seven minutes remaining, but Shin hit her seventh of eight treys and HSU never led by less than nine points the rest of the way.
"Jae was able to keep us in the game with her perimeter shooting," said HSU Head Coach
Joddie Gleason. "As a team, we were able to get a lot of offensive rebounds in the first half, but didn't convert. In the second half, we were able to complete the offensive rebounds."
HSU outrebounded the taller inside Dominican team, 54-44, and hauled in 23 offensive rebounds. The Jacks committed a season-low 10 turnovers and dished out 19 assists.
Shin dropped five first-half treys and added three more in the second half to tie the HSU single-game record of eight set by both Sarah Trobee (1993-94) and Molly Skonieczny (1994-95). The senior guard finished 8-of-13 from beyond the arc and 9-for-15 overall for 26 points, two points shy of her career-high. She also pulled down a career-best five rebounds.
"Jae has more playmakers around her this year and it is causing teams to lose track of her on defense. She is also playing with a sense of urgency in her game," said Gleason.
On the glass,
A'Jaee Foster produced her biggest game against taller competition. The junior forward netted 16 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for her second double-double in five contests.
"A'Jaee has a nose for the ball. She gets in position and tracks down the rebounds," said Gleason. "Her rebounding is the main reason we brought her in and she has answered the call, while battling against much bigger people."
Megan Shields chipped in 14 points and six rebounds on the inside. Gamer added all-around with 13 points, including three treys, six assists and four rebounds.
Nikki Powell had six points and six rebounds.
Dominican (2-3) received a team-high 17 points by Carly Holboke. Sarah Nelson had a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.
After an opening Penguins' foul shot, Shields banked home a bucket to give the Jacks their first and last lead of the night. HSU never trailed the final 39:35 of the night.
Following Shin's two 3-pointers, Dominican held strong and came back to within three points three times with the last at 21-18 at 9:53. A Foster free throw and Shin 3-pointer pushed the HSU lead back to seven points, 25-18, before the home team led 38-27 at intermission.
HSU opens its California Collegiate Athletic Association schedule next weekend. The Jacks start league play at the Gators of San Francisco State on Friday in a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
