ARCATA, Calif. – After a goal by each team in the opening 12 minutes, Humboldt State and BYU-Hawaii were unable to break the 1-1 tie and finished the two overtimes and final 98 minutes without a deciding score.
The Lumberjacks'
Quintin Aguilar deflected the home team's lone goal only 4:54 into the match. The Seasiders (0-3-1) answered with the lone other match score at 12:09, before the eventual tie result.
"Today's game was a hard-fought battle by both teams and our guys had a strong performance in front of another great home crowd," said HSU Head Coach
Fred Jungemann. "The defense is playing better with each game and the team played well start to finish."
The Jacks (4-1-1) were outshot, 22-20, over the 110-minute match, but blistered seven shots to the Seasiders' two tries in the two overtime periods.
"We created enough chances to win the game today, we just need to find a way to get the ball into the back of the net to finish off teams in tough games like these," said Jungemann.
Aguilar and
Braxton Griffin both attempted three HSU shots.
Andre Bernal recorded his three shots over the final 22 minutes of the match.
Jacks' goalie
Javier Torres stopped a season-high nine saves in the net.
At 4:54, Griffin booted a pass from the left sideline across the front of the goal to the right.
Sam Wahl pulled in the pass, sent it to the front left of the goal where Aguilar deflected it off his chest into the goal.
HSU will begin California Collegiate Athletic Association play next Friday evening in a 7 p.m. match at Cal State East Bay in Hayward, Calif.
