     ARCATA, Calif. - After a home California Collegiate Athletic Association sweep last week, Humboldt State volleyball looks to continue the success, while trying to reverse its fortune against upcoming opponents the team has historically struggled.

     The Lumberjacks will entertain three southern California league opponents in No. 8 Cal State San Bernardino Wednesday, UC San Diego Thursday and Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday night in 7 p.m. matches.

THORN IN TEAM'S SIDE

     The Jacks continued progress will be put to the test this week. HSU's three foes have been more than a thorn in its side since joining the CCAA ranks nine years ago.

     HSU is a combined 1-47 against Cal State San Bernardino, UC San Diego and Cal Poly Pomona. In fact, the Jacks have not registered a victory against any of the three conference teams since taking a straight sets, 3-0, win from Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 22, 2006 in Arcata.

BEST CCAA START IN SIX YEARS

     In Head Coach Kelly Wood's second year, she has led her team to the program's best CCAA start in six years. HSU holds a 4-2 league record after the opening three weeks of play. The Jacks last held a 4-2 mark during the 2008 campaign.

     HSU looks to built on the 4-2 and have a better finish to the CCAA season compared to 2008 where it dropped its next five matches and finished 7-13.

     The North Coast team needs only three more CCAA victories to equal last year's 7-15 final mark.
 

RENSHAW CONTINUES TO LEAD SERVERS

     In a new role this season, junior Kelci Renshaw has 

maintained her serving prowess. After being the team's libero a year ago, Renshaw has moved into a defensive specialist and server extrodinaire.

     The Nankuli, Hawaii native has a CCAA-best 21 aces and a 0.52 aces per set. 
 

BEWLEY SHOWS STRONG

     Middle blocker Nicole Bewley continued to lead the center of HSU's frontline hitters last week. The junior downed 23 kills with three errors in 42 swings for a .476 hitting percentage. She led the Jacks with 14 kills and six block assists in the win over Chico State.

     Bewley rates sixth in the CCAA for both hitting percentage (.337) and total blocks (34). Her 0.85 blocks per set stands 10th best in the league.
 

RIFILATO MOVING UP IN ASSISTS

     After being forced to miss last season to injury, Kat Rifilato has been able to showcase her all-around talents this season. 

     The sophomore outside hitter/setter has moved up the CCAA assist ranks to seventh in assists (326) and eighth in assists per set (6.50).  She also has 67 kills, 68 digs and 10 block assists to her credit.

     • Haley Biles: 3rd - Digs/set (4.69); 4th - Digs (183); 11th - Aces (11)

     • Ashley Owen: 7th - Kills (124)

     • Erin Mitchell: 11th - Assists (186)
 

SCOUTING THIS WEEK'S CCAA OPPONENTS:

No. 8 Cal State San Bernardino (8-2 / 5-1 CCAA)

     • CSUSB leads series 15-7

     • Defending CCAA champion 

     • Head Coach Kim Chemiss has the most wins in the CCAA with 534 wins and a .730 winning percentage over 24 years leading the Coyotes

     • Coyotes won all 16 meetings since Jacks joined the CCAA

     • Jacks last won a 3-0 match in Chico during the 1997 season

     • CSUSB won 3-0 in Arcata (10-3-13) & 3-1 in SB (11-9-13) last year

     • Coyotes lead CCAA in team hitting (.270) and total blocks (102)

     • Tori May tops CCAA in hitting (.399) and 3rd in total blocks (42)

     • Brenna McIntosh is 1st for total blocks (53) and 2nd in hitting (.371)

     • Libero Arielle McCullough leads CCAA in digs (213)
 

RV UC San Diego (7-4 / 5-2 CCAA)

     • UCSD leads series 16-0

     • Tritons won the 2013 meetings by a 3-1 score in Arcata (10-5-13) and a 3-0 sweep in La Jolla (11-8-13)

     • Split two road matches last week with a 3-1 loss at Sonoma State and a 3-1 win at SF State.

     • Setter Heidi Sierks rates 2nd in assists (439) in CCAA

     • Makensie Bates is 2nd with 193 digs 

     • Caitlin Brenton leads team's hitters with 141 kills, 3rd in CCAA
 

Cal Poly Pomona (5-5 / 3-4 CCAA)

     • Broncos lead series 23-1 and 15-1 since Jacks joined CCAA

     • HSU lone CCAA and last win in the series came in a 3-0 sweep in Arcata on 9-22-06

     • CPP took a 3-0 sweep in Arcata (10-9-13) and a 3-1 decision in Pomona (10-23-13) last season

     • Dropped both road matches last week at SF State (3-2) and Sonoma State (3-0) to fall to 1-3 on away from home

     • Christen Williams rates 2nd in CCAA for total blocks (48) and 4th in hitting percentage (.349)

     • Deanna Blaine paces CPP with 121 kills and 2nd in digs (139)
