Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Guei’s Game-Winning Shot Lifts Jacks Over Otters 75-74

ARCATA, Calif. -- With less than 4.9 seconds left in Saturday's game, Allan Guei bolted down the court and sank a game-winning shot that lifted the Humboldt State men's basketball team over Cal State Monterey Bay 75-74.

"When he gets going down hill and sees daylight, he is hard to stop," said Head Coach Steve Kinder. "We made sure the ball was in the right hands – they were Allan Guei's. He is the most dedicated in terms of his training and practice regimen. This game was reminiscent of the Chico State game. We had a great crowd tonight and this was special."

The win makes the Lumberjacks 11-5 overall and 5-5 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. Cal State Monterey Bay's loss moves the Otters to 8-8 overall and 4-6 in conference play.

In a game that featured seven ties and eight lead changes, it was the last 20 seconds that proved to be the most important.

Trailing by three, 74-71, to Cal State Monterey Bay after an Alex Fertig jumper, HSU looked as if it would split its weekend homestand. Rakim Brown was fouled with eight seconds left in the game and sank the pair of free throws to pull the Jacks within one, 74-73.

A missed free throw by the Otters' leading scorer Evan Zeller and an Austin Bryan defensive rebound set the Green and Gold up for the last second game winner.

Saturday's game was full speed collision of two of the CCAA's best offensive squads. Cal State Monterey Bay entered the evening ranked second behind only HSU in points scored.

The teams traded shots in the opening half and, despite a 3-point bucket from Malik Morgan before the buzzer sounded, the Jacks trailed by one, 37-36, at the break. Morgan and Guei led the HSU offense with seven points apiece in the opening period.

HSU led by seven points with 7:03 left in the game, but a foul on Zeller allowed him to complete a four-point play. Zeller, who scored only four points in the first half, doubled his output in the second and finished the game 3-for-10 from the field and 4-for-6 at the charity stripe for 12 points.

The Otters gained the momentum after Zeller's four-point play and not only erased the Jacks' lead, but built a five-point advantage, 72-67, with 2:12 left to play.

Guei had a team-high 16 points and was 7-for-14 shooting. The Compton, Calif., native 2-for-3 from long distance and had a pair of assists and rebounds.

Four other HSU players scored 10 or more points in the win. Morgan (13), Brown (11), Austin Bryan (10) and Thomas Witzel (10) each surpassed the mark. Brown also compiled eight of the Jacks' 32 rebounds and Morgan finished with a team-best eight assists.

HSU shot 44 percent from the field and finished 8-for-23 (35 percent) from outside the arc. The Green and Gold were 11-for-15 (73 percent) from the free throw line.

The Jacks travel to face Cal Poly Pomona next Friday at 7:30 p.m. HSU follows up Friday's game with a trip to UC San Diego Saturday.

"We talked about taking care of business at home and did that this weekend," said Kinder. "We did our part at home and have said that if we can split on the road that is a good recipe for a championship. Let's be greedy and win two."
