ARCATA, Calif. – After playing its closest game of the season two nights ago, Humboldt State wasted no time taking control and it ousted Cal State Monterey Bay, 76-55, Saturday night. The Lumberjacks tied a program record with their 13
th-straight victory.
The Jacks converted their first two field goal attempts and three of their opening four shots and opened a 7-0 lead.
Jae Shin downed 13 of her game-high 20 points to help HSU open a 39-20 halftime lead. Cal State Monterey Bay was unable to get closer than 20 points in the final 17 minutes.
"Obviously, it was nice to enjoy this game a bit more (compared to Thursday's night's two-point win over Cal State East Bay, 68-66). It was huge for all our players to get in tonight as they work hard and don't get in many games," said HSU Head Coach
Joddie Gleason.
With the 13
th win a row, HSU (14-1) ties the program record win streak set during the 1993-94 campaign. The Jacks improve to 10-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and now have a two-game CCAA lead, since Cal State Dominguez Hills lost to UC San Diego (60-55). Cal State Monterey Bay is now 3-12 overall and 1-9 in the conference.
"Great teams get in the record books," said Gleason. "It is still early, but it is nice having the win streak."
A big part of team's 13
th win in a row was Shin. The senior tri-captain missed only a hard drive in traffic and finished 7-for-8, downed all four treys and both foul shots she attempted for 20 points. It was her highest total since she hit 26 points against Dominican on Nov. 29. She added two rebounds, an assist and a steal.
"Everyone knows Jae can hit from 3-point range, but she has developed her game to attack the basket. She was able to do both, especially in the first half," said Gleason.
Shin said, "Everything was clicking.
Kersey Wilcox (who had three assists to her) was able to find me everywhere tonight."
Neika Puryear also was hot from the floor. Puryear made 5-of-6 attempts, both 3-point tries and a pair of free throws for 14 points. The junior grabbed five rebounds, handed out four assists and stole three passes.
"It felt good tonight. I was struggling the last few games," said Puryear. "My teammates never get down on me and our team always lifts each other up."
On the inside,
A'Jaee Foster posted her fifth double-double of the season. The forward made 5-of-10 shots for 12 points to go with 11 rebounds, nine defensive.
Nikki Powell added seven rebounds, four points and two blocks, while Wilcox finished with seven assists.
Off the bench,
Megan Shields,
Sumayyah Wiggins and
Nyaa Davis all chipped in five points apiece.
Cal State Monterey Bay's Jenna Bandy and Kaila Turner each netted 10 points, respectively.
As a team, HSU recorded 19 assists to only 14 turnovers. The home defense also held the Otters to 27 percent (17-of-63) shooting in the contest.
HSU will face its toughest road trip of the year next week. The Jacks play at defending CCAA champion Cal Poly Pomona Friday and perennial-power UC San Diego Saturday. Both games start at 5:30 p.m.
