Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Downs Golden Eagles 85-74

ARCATA, Calif. -- Five Lumberjacks scored 10 or more points as the Humboldt State men's basketball team downed visiting Cal State Los Angeles, 85-74, Saturday at Lumberjack Arena.

"The key to tonight's game was rebounding, making plays on defense and relentlessly executing our pace of play game plan," said Head Coach Steve Kinder.

Saturday's result extended the Lumberjacks' (8-4, 2-4) winning streak to five games and it was their second straight California Collegiate Athletic Association victory. Cal State Los Angeles is now 4-6 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

Both teams swapped the lead during the first 13 minutes of action before Ethan Dillard sank a 3-pointer to send HSU on a 16-4 run to end the half. Rakim Brown slammed down a dunk as time expired to give the Green and Gold a 15-point lead, 46-31, at intermission.

HSU scored 21 of its first-half points off turnovers and connected on 5-of-10 3-point attempts. Malik Morgan and David Howard each scored 10 points in the opening period.

The Jacks' offense roared out of the locker room and extended it advantage to 32 points, 78-46, with 8:14 remaining. Brown punctuated HSU's game-high lead when he snapped an above-backboard pass from Andrew Cones and slammed it with two hands through basket.

Brown's dunk proved to be a wake up call for the Golden Eagles who rebounded to close out the game on a 28-7 run.

Cones led HSU with 14 points in the second half and finished the game as one of Jacks' five double-digit scorers. Morgan (16), Brown (16), Howard (14), Cones (14) and Allan Guei (12) were the Green and Gold's top offensive playmakers.

The Jacks shot 49 percent from the field and matched the Golden Eagles on the boards with 31 apiece. HSU compiled 10 steals and Guei led the team with three.

HSU travels to face rival Chico State on Friday, Jan. 9. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. PT.

"This is a short week and we face one of the toughest teams in our conference and our rival," said Kinder. "We are excited about facing Chico State while we are on this winning streak and really coming together as a team."
