Volleyball Shocks Tritons In Five-Set Thriller

Box Score ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State volleyball team was 0-18 against UC San Diego entering Thursday night's match. Despite the history, being down after the first and third sets, and trailing in the fourth and fifth sets, the Lumberjacks (6-5, 4-3) defeated the visiting Tritons (8-4, 4-2) in front of the home crowd (19-25, 26-24, 21-25, 25-22, 15-13).

"We came out in the fourth and had a rough start, things were a bit discombobulated at times," said Head Coach Kelly Wood. "To be down in the fourth and the fifth, and come back is a huge confidence boost for us."

The Jacks were down in the fourth set, 15-10, before an impressive run brought on by the consistent serving of Kaitlyn Dunaway turned things around. Humboldt State scored on nine consecutive Dunaway serves to take the lead from the Tritons. After a response by UCSD, four serves by Jessica Lammers put the Jacks ahead and all but sealed the fourth set. HSU closed it out, and earned the 25-21 win.

HSU found itself down again in the fifth set. At the 8-4 mark, just as the teams were switching sides, coach Wood called a timeout to regroup her side. Started by one of Symone Hayden's kills, the Jacks regained the serve and rattled off six straight to lead 10-9. With the set tied at 10, 11, 12, and 13, it was the Jacks who finished things off with back-to-back kills by Alex Hasenstab and Hayden to clinch the match.

"We know what it is going to take for us to do well," said Wood. "We have to serve teams out of system, pass well on serve receive, and play really, scrappy tough defense. We fight, we battle, and we are exciting. I'm just really proud of the girls tonight.

The match opened a three-game home stand. Cal State San Bernardino comes to Lumberjack Arena on Saturday evening for a 7 p.m. CCAA match, followed by Cal State East Bay on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
