ARCATA, Calif. – For the second consecutive match, a Humboldt State senior scored her first career goal in a 1-0 home victory. After the Lumberjacks (9-5-2, 5-3-2) earned three points on
Jillian Andersen's goal Friday,
Emily Huska scored her game-winner on senior day as Humboldt State defeated Stanislaus State (9-4-3, 4-3-3).
"Senior Day is always special, and we couldn't be more proud of this group for the result," said Head Coach
Paul Karver. "Stanislaus is a fantastic team, and it took a full team effort to get the three points today."
Just over a half an hour after being recognized as one of the eight graduating seniors in the pregame ceremony, Huska subbed onto the College Creek Field for the final regular season time in her career. After just a minute of play, Huska was the beneficiary of a Green and Gold attack up the right side of the field. The play started in the back with the Humboldt backline stealing the ball from the Warriors.
Courtney Rebata then played it from midfield to the right flank where
MaKenna Dunn had room to run. After taking the space up the sideline, Dunn fired in a ball that connected with
Caitlin Castle around the six-yard box. Castle then redirected the ball away from the oncoming goalkeeper and found Huska in front of the goal. The senior emphatically put the ball in the back of the net, just 1:05 after subbing on. Dunn and Castle earned assists on the 37
th minute goal.
Senior goalkeeper
Caitlin Plese was once again a force in net, gobbling up shot after shot. The transfer added five saves to her California Collegiate Athletic Association high, and recorded her eighth shutout of the season. Plese is solely in second place in the HSU record book with eight clean sheets on the year, and lowered her goals against average to a season-best 0.83.
The win also jumps the Jacks up to fifth in the CCAA standings with one weekend remaining on the conference schedule.
"The belief continues for this group and now we need another six points in Southern California next weekend," said Karver.
The Jacks will play at Cal Poly Pomona on Friday. The Broncos trail Humboldt by a point in the CCAA standings and will be fighting towards one of the six conference tournament spots as well. The regular season concludes at Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 31. Conference games will be played throughout the day, meaning playoff seedings will not be finalized until the conclusion of the final match.
