SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The women's soccer season came to an unfortunate end on Saturday. Entering the day, Humboldt State (9-7-2, 5-5-2) knew that the regular-season would conclude after the match. However, following the 2-1 loss to Cal State San Bernardino (5-10-3, 4-7-1), and an unfavorable result in the final California Collegiate Athletic Association match of the day, the Jacks failed to earn a playoff berth.
"At 1-0 there was a real belief, but a few things didn't go our way and unfortunately the game was taken out of our hands," said Head Coach
Paul Karver. "The group is fantastic and the courage they had today was a testament to that quality."
The Jacks jumped ahead in the 38
th minute with a finish by freshman sensation,
Bridget Daley. The Carlsbad, Calif., native scored her team-high seventh goal of the year coming from the
Emily Huska pass. Daley's seven goals are tied for fifth in the CCAA and are tied for 11
th in the HSU single season records.
Despite going into the halftime locker room with the lead, the second half took a turn. HSU allowed a pair of goals to San Bernardino's Melanie Aguayo and Paige Kang in the 68
th and 76
th minutes, respectively.
"Winning big games takes experience, and now we can apply this to next year," said Karver. "We couldn't be more proud of this group."
The Green and Gold finished in seventh in the CCAA, a tremendous jump from 2014's last-place finish. The nine overall wins and five conference wins are the most since 2008. The Jacks finished .500 or better in conference play for the first time since 2006.
