ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State men's basketball team is likely thankful for a number of things, but on Wednesday night it was the 3-point basket. The Green and Gold hit a season-high 17 3-pointers as they defeated William Jessup 110-73 in Lumberjack Arena.
HSU improved to 3-0 with the win and William Jessup slipped to 4-4 overall.
"Our rebounding effort was a key to the game tonight," said Head Coach
Steve Kinder. "We stressed rebounding and running for layups, and we did that early. By getting William Jessup on its heels we created open shots. Our success shooting came as a result of our defensive intensity early."
The Jacks shot a blistering 62.5 percent from beyond the arc in the first half and had the game in the win column by intermission. Senior
Rakim Brown continued his dominating start to the 2015-16 season with 14 points in the first 20 minutes.
"Rocky is hard to guard," said Kinder. "His limit is whatever he wants to make it. He can be a good player on a good team or a great player on a great team. The sky is the limit for him."
William Jessup trailed the Green and Gold by 32, 59-27, at the break.
Brown finished the game with a team-high 23 points, it was his third consecutive game with 20-plus points this season.
Ball movement was much improved for the Jacks as they distributed 20 assists compared to only five turnovers. Sophomore
Malik Morgan dished out nine assists to go with 14 points.
Ethan Dillard (15),
Tyras Rattler (13) and
Thomas Witzel (23) each finished with double-digit scoring totals. Dillard connected on a team-best five 3-pointers in the win.
"We are becoming more polished as we stay home with this young group," said Kinder. "We will take Thursday off and let their bodies rest up. We begin preparing Friday for Saturday night."
HSU welcomes Pacific Union to Lumberjack Arena on Saturday, Nov. 28. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
